Matte decals are more delicate before firing, so if you're concerned about tearing during application, glossy is the safer choice. If you'd prefer no visible border around your cutout, matte is the way to go.

How to choose a finish.
After firing, the decal becomes a permanent part of the glaze surface. Ceramic pigments sink into the glaze and fuse with it, just as glaze does. The matte or glossy overglaze layer we apply is formulated to be food safe when properly fired to a minimum of cone 018.

Permanent and food safe?
The minimum temperature you need to fire your decals to is cone 018 (approx. 1,310°F). You can fire them up to cone 04 (approx. 1,920°F) but be aware that the hotter you fire to, the lighter your decals will become. See photos below:

All designs sold by Fire Belly Decals are legally cleared for use. Our collection is made up of:
✷Original artwork created and owned by Fire Belly Decals
✷ Public domain images, including pre-1923 works no longer under copyright
✷ Open access images sourced from museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Field Museum, the Smithsonian, and the Cleveland Museum of Art
✷ Licensed images purchased under commercial licenses
